Both teams went into the game still without a win in their opening five matches. Mallorca started with only four players from the 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid, which was surprising considering their second half performance. What wasn’t surprising was the Mallorca coach Arrasate going into the game with five at the back with David Lopez coming in for the injured Kumbulla, Toni Lato in for Mojica at left back and good to see Maffeo at right back for Morey. The game plan was obviously not to lose the game but I’m sure to most Mallorca fans this game was a free hit as Sociedad were like Mallorca looking for their first win of the season.
In an unsurprisingly drab game where both teams look short of ideas it was the home side rage that took the lead in the 49th minute from Spanish international Mikel Oyarzabal. Mallorca’s only hope o& an equalizer came when a volley from Samu Costa was deflected over the bar from what looked like a Sociedad defenders arm. The referee agreed and awarded a penalty which after a very long VAR intervention was disallowed for inconclusive evidence.
A defeat was probably what Mallorca deserved and heaps more pressure on coach Arrasate going into the weekends home game against Alaves.
