Before the international break Mallorca had lost 2-1 away at Athletic Club and Sevilla had gubbed Barcelona 4-1. So you’d be forgiven if you thought this was going to be a difficult match. In fact the last time Mallorca had won an away game was April 12th last season, a 0-2 victory at Real Sociedad.
It’s good to see coach Arrasate continuing with his 4-2-3-1 formation and he was boosted by the return of Jan Virgili from the Spanish national team at the U-20’s World Cup Finals.
Sevilla started with all the confidence of a team that had beaten Barcelona last time out and deservedly took the lead in the 16th minute with a goal from Vargas. Mallorca’s two best chances came from the very lively Virgili but Sevilla looked comfortable. The second half began the same, but it all changed when Arrasate decided to bring on Mojica at left back and Mateo Joseph up front.
Virgili was still causing Sevilla problems and it was his pass to Muriqi in the 67th that resulted in the equaliser. Rather than sit back and hold on for a draw, Mallorca pushed on and in the 72nd minute Mojica sent in a beautiful cross that was turned in by Joseph for his first goal of the season. That wasn’t the end of the scoring though. A speculative punt forward by Samu Costa wasn’t dealt with by the Sevilla defence and Joseph jumped on the opportunity to slot in his second goal of the game.
A remarkable turnaround for Mallorca which will give the squad an enormous amount of confidence and will keep coach Arrasate in his job for the foreseeable future.
Mallorca’s next home game is this Sunday the 26th of October at 14.00 versus Levante. If you would like tickets for the game please contact us on 0034 670 704 311.
